Almost 130 years ago in 1888, Shimonoseki Shunpanro was honored by Prince Ito Hirobumi, the first prime minister of Japan, to become the first publicly licensed restaurant to serve fugu (blowfish) dishes. ( The restaurant has seen many historic changes as the guesthouse in Shimonoseki, commanding views of the Kanmon Straits.)
